Variable tolls

This is a recent toll schedule for the Orange County Express Lanes in Southern California. It gives an example of the type of tolls that are charged to keep the HOT lanes full but freeflowing. San Diego's I=15 HOT lanes does not have a preset toll price but instead has dynamic tolling where the price is changed every six minutes according to the demands being made on the system. The price is posted one-third of a mile before the entrance to give motorists an opportunity to decide whether to use it or not.

The advantage of variable pricing is that it allows the county to manage the lanes to produce the greatest throughput of vehicles per hour. Studies of actual throughputs of these two HOT lanes facilities show that in practice twice as many vehicles per hour will be achieved on the HOT lanes as on the congested adjacent lanes.
