The City’s Bus/Rapid Transit (BRT) proposal consists of two parts — the Regional BRT from Kapolei to Middle Street and the In-town BRT from Middle Street to UH and Waikiki.
We have not objected to the Regional BRT, which may have considerable benefit, because we have only been concerned with the In-town BRT, which we consider will be a disaster for Honolulu traffic and not necessary to gain the advantages that the Regional BRT may offer. The City’s own study shows that from Kapolei to Waikiki, for example, during rush hour, bus riders would save 25 minutes from Kapolei to Downtown but only 1.8 minutes from Downtown to Waikiki. The havoc that BRT will cause to gain that one minute is not worth it. Consider the following for the In-town BRT:c
The City plans to create exclusive and semi-exclusive lanes for the BRT. This will reduce the number of lanes available to motorists, tour buses and goods delivery vehicles. |
