The first table is worth spending some time with. It shows that in the period 1980-2000 that no metro area of the 50 largest managed to increase the percentage of commuters using public transportation whether or not they built a rail line.

The next table of Census data shows how the same thing has occurred in Honolulu where the percentage has declined from 10.0% to 8.3% over a 20-year period. This despite an increase in the bus fleet of 30% and a significant increase in financial losses. The declines continue.  Honolulu's commuting
